Six Sigma Approach Being Adopted by In-house Counsel

Six-sigma-bAs part of the movement towards increasing efficiency and controlling outside legal expenses, more corporate law departments are adopting a Six Sigma approach.   Simply defined, Six Sigma is a method of improving processes (or in plain English, it represents a commitment to continuing to find ways to do things better).

While off-shoring certain aspects of discovery or IP may itself be part of a Six Sigma approach (i.e. finding less expensive ways to get the same IP research and drafting done), there are also LPOs which employ a Six Sigma style in working with clients.

IPEngine, for example, not only helps law firms and corporate law departments to marshal technical talent in India (at a substantial cost savings),  but it also employs a process oriented approach that emphasises continuous improvement.  In other words, IPEngine, like some other LPOs, provides cost savings while offering the chance for additional cost savings by identifying and creating better processes for getting the work done.

Corporate counsel are clearly looking for ways to streamline their IP work.  Law firms that understand this are going to find themselves working with much happier clients.
